When I say the end, I don’t mean the end of the world or anything like that. What I do mean is, could this be the end of what we have come to accept as normal politics – the end of “normal” US, Canadian relations? Today at 12 noon EST, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States of America.
I’m not going to get into whether or not I like Trump, or if he is going to be a good President or not. What I’m interested in is whether or not the protocols of governing will be thrown out the window. One thing is for sure, Trump has stated that he will continue to use Twitter as his favorite mode of communication. No longer will we see carefully worded responses to world affairs as it concerns the President, press conferences may cease to occur. We will be tweeted. How will world leaders respond to these off the cuff responses. Perhaps they will adapt or have to adapt to the new Presidents often brash criticisms and musings. Will they take him seriously, or too seriously?
It is clear that America wanted a change… well, I think they are going to get it, and we Canadians are going to be dragged along in the slipstream. Trump has stated that he will tear down the policies of the past administration. Is this good? To me it seems a bit backward. To me it would make sense to move forward. He has four years to make America Great again. If it takes him two years to tear things apart, he’d better get off his butt and work on the changes he has espoused to believe in.
I’m not a Democrat, nor am I a Republican. I’m a conservative Canadian who is holding his breath, not necessarily in fear, but in wonder as to what the heck is going to happen over the next four years. As a Real Estate Broker, I wonder how the Trump Administration will effect my industry? There will be fluctuation in the Market, people will become skittish for while. I anticipate that people will be careful. If there are no great changes in the way we as Canadians do business, upwards and onward. There is talk of renewing talks regarding the pipeline to the States. Being a commodity based economy, this will be good for Canada. It will be good for our Dollar. I’d like to see it back up at 85c. What’s going to happen with our trade agreements?
It will certainly be an interesting few years ahead of us. Lets hope that cooler heads prevail. We can only sit and watch from our perch in the North.
I thought the picture was funny. I was trying my best to find something that included Trump and a Canadian theme. A beaver will just have to do.
